My journey into healthcare began with a childhood shaped by resilience, curiosity, and inspiration. When I was just five years old, I lost my father to a terminal illness, and my mother became my guiding light, raising me as her only child. Despite the challenges, she instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility and drive. I was always eager to excel in school, motivated by a natural curiosity and a hands-on learning style that helped me succeed academically.
My uncle, an ER physician, became a significant role model in my life. I admired his dedication and loved hearing his stories about the fast-paced, unpredictable environment of emergency medicine. His accounts of chaotic yet life-saving moments left a lasting impression on me, sparking a fascination with the field. By the time I reached junior high, I had already decided I wanted to work in emergency medicine.
That passion only grew during high school when I participated in a staged drunk driving accident scenario. Playing the role of a patient in this event gave me a unique perspective on the work of first responders. I was captivated by how the EMTs conducted themselves, even in a simulated crisis, and the idea of being on the frontlines of care resonated deeply with me. Knowing the education requirements were attainable, I pursued my certification as an EMT-Basic.
Becoming an EMT was my first step into the world of healthcare. I spent two years on an ambulance, responding to emergencies and providing critical care to patients in their most vulnerable moments. Eventually, I transitioned into the emergency department as an ER technician, where I gained even more hands-on experience and a broader understanding of patient care.
While I initially loved the chaos and adrenaline of emergency medicine, over time, I found myself yearning for a different pace. I decided to explore clinical medicine, working in an outpatient family medicine clinic for a brief period before transitioning to cardiology. This move allowed me to combine my technical skills with a more focused, long-term approach to patient care.
After a year of working as an uncertified medical assistant in cardiology, I sought to formalize my experience and applied to take the CCMA exam through the National Healthcareer Association. Earning my certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) was a pivotal moment in my career. It validated my skills and opened new opportunities to grow as a healthcare professional.
For the past three years, I’ve worked as a medical assistant in cardiology, where I’ve found a balance between the fast-paced environment I once thrived in and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with patients.
